There are MANY South Africans incarcerated in foreign countries and MANY foreigners incarcerated in South African Prisons. South Africa boasts "the best constitution in the world" ... yet, we are one of only two countries in the world today WITHOUT a Prisoner Exchange Agreement in place. In 2004 a white paper was drafted but was rejected by Cabinet.
THIS MUST CHANGE because overseas prisoners (our own people) are not only imprisoned in inhumane and barbaric conditions, they are kept continents away from their families. The punishments usually DO NOT fit the crimes and the families of prisoners are harshly crippled through this.
The punishment is the incarceration .. not the human right abuses they are experiencing every day!
Please view our website where this ugly reality is outlined. True life stories, real accounts of how it is NOW in Oct 2008. www.chartermart.co.za/lockedup.htm and find us on Facebook Groups: "Locked Up in a Foreign Country"
WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR THESE PRISONERS TO BE SET FREE... we are asking for them to be sent HOME to serve their time in a place where their families can care for them. Right now the families are becoming financially crippled while supporting a jailed loved one overseas and the prisoners are being raped, tortured, starved.. and there is no one nearby who can help them. That's just barbaric!
They may or may not have committed a crime. They may or may not have received a fair trial... but at base level, they are all still someones son, daughter, mom, dad, uncle, etc. Imagine it.
EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO HUMANE TREATMENT, REGARDLESS OF ANY CRIME!
Please sign our petition. Thank You.
