To the minister of transport of South Africa.
As South Africans, we are tired of the Mini Taxi's complete disregard for the law and order, and putting our lives in danger each day on the road. As citizens we pay taxes for law enforcement and policing on the road, whilst the taxi industry does not pay any taxes at all and do not get fined for their lawless behaviour. The police are quick to pull over a motorist on a cell phone and hide behind their speed traps, but they will not police our roads and make them safer for all citizens. Are the traffic police too scared to police the roads, or is it that the just do not know how to?
The South Africa government have no control of the lawless taxi industry and do not take responsibility for public transport in the country. Why is public transport left to a group of thugs who regularly engage in intimidation and taxi violence? Would this happen in any other country in the world? Do the yellow cabs in New York rule the roads, or do the police?
We are South Africans lay the problem at the door of our ineffective traffic department and your lacklustre governance of it. The traffic department are lazy and do not police for simple traffic offences. How about getting up from behind your speed traps and hiding behind corners to pounce on us law abiding, tax paying citizens to catch us for talking on our cell phones. And when you do, it is normally only to bribe us for ?lunch money?. The traffic department is corrupt and it sickens us that lives of innocent people are being put on the line for your departments greed and laziness.
I am certain that the mini taxis are responsible for much more death, maiming and lives destroyed that drivers on cell phones.
WHY DO THE HAVE THE SAME LICENCES AS NORMAL DRIVERS? Should taxi drivers not have taxi licences? So they can be tested to see ifthey are capable of driving these vehicles which are harder to drive that normal cars?
Where is the point system?
We are concerned citizens ask you, the minister of transport to do something about the mini taxis, take control of public transport like any other effective government in the world. Bring the traffic department in line and punish your corrupt officers. Why is it that it can take any journalist a day to uncover your department?s corruption, yet you seem oblivious to it?
Take charge of your position and fix the mini taxi cancer in South Africa. Stop being bullied by these thugs and being pushed into submission each time you impose anything on them. What happens each time you propose the new taxi scheme? You encounter resistance and run back and hide in your office. Get some backbone or put someone in the position that has some.
Mini taxis are causing the majority of road rage on South Africa roads!
There is a famous saying thay goes along the lines that you can measure the state of a country's anarchy and how well it is governed by seeing how people conduct themselves on the road. Well if that is the case it seems like we have a pretty useless government.
Be a man, take charge of the mini taxi industry for the safety and sanity of all South Africans.
DO NOT BUY PRODUCTS ADVERTISED ON TAXIS
We should also avoid buying any products we see advertised on a Minibus Taxi - these companies are supporting moving deathtraps. We should nit support them. Take note of any advertising you see on taxis - and do not buy those products!
This is the taxi recapitalisation program, introduced in January 2000 - What happend, did you notice yet it was 2007? They start this by saying "The thousands of taxi passengers who annually lose their lives on South African roads will be greatly reduced by the implementation of the Taxi Recapitalisation Project that starts this year."
SO THAT MEANS IN THE LAST 7 YEARS, EVEN MORE THOUSANDS OF LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST! How many in total? Do they not care?!
"SA roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with road accidents killing 10 000 people every year, despite a well developed infrastructure which is the envy of the African continent. Poor maintenance of taxis and overloading is blamed for many of the road deaths. - Reuters"
Ask yourself this, have you ever seen a mini-taxi with dents and scrapes? Death is on our roads, and its in the shape of mini taxis. They cannot be allowed to continue as a law unto themselves - sign this petition if you agree.
I the undersigned hereby show my support for this petition.
