In China, millions of animals, including cats and dogs, are extensively used for fur. They are bred, held, handled and transported in an utterly inhumane manner, and eventually suffer a horrendous death. There is currently no animal welfare legislation in China to protect fur-bearing animals – including dogs and cats – from the most barbaric treatment imaginable.
· China is the world’s largest producer and exporter of fur, with exports totalling over US$2 billion in 2004.
· Sometimes what is labelled "faux fur" is actually real fur, often dog and cat fur. Dog and cat fur appears as fur trim on jackets, shoes, scarves, trinkets, toys, hair bands, and sometimes even full fur coats.
· Many of the victims of China’s dog and cat fur trade are stolen pets.
· Many countries have extremely vague labelling laws, meaning that items containing dog and cat fur are often mislabelled as faux fur or under exotic sounding names.
· Wild animals such as fox, mink, rabbit, and raccoon dog also suffer immense cruelty on China’s fur farms.
"We, the undersigned, implore the Chinese Government in the name of humanity and compassion to ensure that the animals who give their lives for your sustenance will be assured of a comfortable life and a humane death by means of the necessary legislation protecting the welfare of all animals in China. Until such legislation is promulgated and enforced, we will be supporting the world-wide campaign for caution among all compassionate people when purchasing Chinese products bearing any kind of fur." |
